Guatapé sits at approximately 1,900 meters altitude in the Antioquia Andes. The temperature stays remarkably consistent year-round — averaging 18–20°C (64–68°F) — but rainfall, crowd levels, and pricing vary dramatically by month. Knowing when to go can make or break your experience.
The Quick Version
Month by Month
January ☀️
Peak dry season and peak tourist season. Colombian families are on summer holiday, so weekends and the first two weeks are very crowded. La Piedra can have queues of 30+ minutes on Saturdays and Sundays. Finca prices are at their highest. The weather is excellent — sunny, dry, warm. If you go, visit on a weekday.
February ☀️
Still dry season, but the holiday crowds thin out after the first week. One of the best months to visit — great weather, manageable crowds, and prices start to drop from the December–January peak. Ideal for photography with clear morning skies.
March ⚖️
Transition month. The first rains start appearing, usually as brief afternoon showers. Mornings are typically clear. Crowds are low, prices are reasonable, and the landscape starts turning extra green. An underrated time to visit.
April 🌧️
The first heavy wet season. Expect rain most afternoons, sometimes for several hours. Mornings are often clear — plan La Piedra for first thing. The reservoir level rises. The upside: very few tourists, lowest finca prices of the year, and incredibly lush green scenery.
May 🌧️
The wettest month in Guatapé. Rain can be persistent and heavy. The stairs at La Piedra are at their most slippery. Boat tours still operate but may be shortened. This is the month for budget travelers who don't mind getting wet — you'll practically have the town to yourself.
June ☀️
Dry season returns and Colombian mid-year holidays (vacaciones de mitad de año) begin. The second half of June sees a significant crowd spike, especially on weekends. Weather is excellent. A great month overall, but book accommodation early for weekends.
July ☀️
Peak dry season and peak international tourist season (Northern Hemisphere summer). Excellent weather, busy weekends, high finca prices. The reservoir is at a good level for water sports. Along with December and January, this is one of the three busiest months.
August ☀️
Still dry, still warm, but international tourists start thinning out in the second half. One of the best months for a visit — great weather with slightly fewer crowds than July. Late August is particularly good.
September 🌧️
The second rainy season begins. Similar to April — afternoon showers, clear mornings. The first two weeks can still feel like dry season. A good shoulder-season option if you're flexible with your plans and don't mind some rain.
October 🌧️
Consistent rain, similar to May. The reservoir is at its highest level, which can actually make boat tours more interesting (new coves accessible). Low crowds, low prices. Bring rain gear and a good attitude.
November 🌧️
The tail end of wet season. Rain decreases through the month. By late November, you start getting dry stretches. Crowds begin picking up in the last week as Colombians start Christmas season preparations. A transitional month that rewards flexibility.
December ☀️
Dry season returns and Colombian Christmas/New Year celebrations take over. This is THE busiest time in Guatapé. Fincas book out weeks in advance. La Piedra has its longest queues of the year. Boat tours run constantly. The town is electric — live music, food vendors everywhere, finca parties. Amazing atmosphere, but book everything early and brace for crowds and premium pricing.
The Best Time to Visit
For the ideal balance of weather, crowds, and pricing: February, late August, or early September. You get dry or mostly-dry weather, manageable tourist numbers, and reasonable prices on accommodation.
For the best weather regardless of crowds: December through February and June through August.
For the lowest prices and fewest people: April, May, or October. You'll get rained on, but Guatapé in the rain has its own moody beauty — and you won't share La Piedra with anyone.
