Head to Terminal del Norte. Catch the first Sotrasanvicente bus to Guatapé (COP 18,000–22,000). Buses depart every 30 minutes starting at 5am. The earlier you leave, the more time you have. Alternatively, your tour group will pick you up from your hotel in El Poblado or Laureles around this time.

Arrive at La Piedra
Llega a la Piedra
The bus drops you at the La Piedra turnoff. It is a 5-minute walk to the entrance (skip the tuk-tuks — save the COP 5,000). Pay the COP 25,000 entry and start climbing. At this hour, you will beat the tour buses that arrive at 9:30–10am.
El bus te deja en el desvío de la Piedra. Camina 5 minutos a la entrada (no necesitas tuk-tuk). Paga COP 25,000 y sube. A esta hora llegas antes que los buses de tour.
Summit Views
Vistas desde la Cima
Enjoy 20–30 minutes at the top. The morning mist over the reservoir is magical. Take your photos, have a coffee from the summit café, and head back down. Total time including climb: about 1 hour.

Boat Tour on the Reservoir
Tour en Lancha
Take a tuk-tuk or walk down to the reservoir waterfront (malecón). Hop on a group boat (COP 30,000, 1–1.5 hours) or hire a private lancha. You will cruise past the islands, see La Piedra from the water, and pass by the ruins of Hacienda La Manuela.

Lunch in Guatapé Town

Head into town for lunch. Skip the tourist-facing restaurants on the main strip and walk one block back for better food at local prices. Try trucha (trout — farmed in the reservoir), bandeja paisa, or arepas de chócolo. A full lunch runs COP 15,000–30,000.

Explore the Zócalos
Explora los Zócalos
Spend an hour wandering the colorful streets. Every building has unique hand-painted bas-relief tiles. Walk around the Plazoleta de los Zócalos, Calle del Recuerdo, and the main plaza. Grab an ice cream or coffee. Browse the souvenir shops for handmade crafts.

If you have energy, rent a jet ski (COP 80,000, 30 min), try paddleboarding, or take an ATV tour (COP 100,000, 45 min). Otherwise, relax at a waterfront café and enjoy the views. This is also shopping time for souvenirs.

Return to Medellín
Regreso a Medellín
Catch a return bus from the Guatapé terminal (last buses around 5:30–6pm on weekdays, slightly later on weekends). The ride back takes about 2 hours. You will be back in Medellín by 6pm. On Sundays, leave earlier to avoid the rush — the 3pm bus is a safer bet.

But guided tours handle all logistics — hotel pickup, transport, a bilingual guide, meals, and boat tour included. If this is your first time in Colombia or you prefer zero planning, a tour is the easiest option. If you like doing things at your own pace and speak basic Spanish, go independent.
