The Guatapé reservoir (Embalse Peñol-Guatapé) was created in 1978 when the valleys were flooded for hydroelectric power. Today it covers over 2,200 hectares of turquoise water dotted with dozens of forested islands — and getting on the water is the second most popular activity after climbing La Piedra.

Group Party Boats
Botes de Fiesta
The most affordable way onto the water. Large open boats with music, usually holding 20–40 people. They cruise the reservoir for 1–2 hours, passing by key landmarks including the cross on one of the islands and the remains of Hacienda La Manuela. Prices start at COP 30,000 per person. Boats depart from the malecón (waterfront) regularly — just walk down and hop on the next one. No booking needed on weekends; weekday boats depart when full.

Private Lanchas
Lanchas Privadas
Hire a private lancha for your group and set your own route and pace. Typical prices run COP 150,000–400,000 for 1–2 hours depending on boat size and whether you include a captain/guide. This is the best option for couples, families, or friend groups who want flexibility. You can ask the captain to stop at islands, find quiet coves for swimming, or spend extra time photographing La Piedra from the water.

Sunset Cruises
Cruceros al Atardecer
Several operators offer late-afternoon departures timed for sunset. The golden light over the reservoir is spectacular. Some sunset cruises include drinks and snacks. These are popular for couples and special occasions. Book in advance on weekends — they fill up during high season (December–January, June–August).

Jet Ski Rentals

Rent a jet ski and ride the open reservoir with La Piedra as your backdrop. Prices start at COP 80,000 for 30 minutes. Multiple operators along the waterfront — no advance booking needed. You drive, and some operators allow two riders. Life jackets are included and required. Views of the rock from the water on a jet ski are some of the best photos you'll take in Guatapé.

Luxury Yacht Charters
Yates de Lujo
For a premium experience, several companies offer full-day luxury yacht charters on the reservoir. These typically include a captain, food, drinks, and music for groups of 8–15. Prices start around COP 1,500,000 for a half day. It's the most exclusive way to experience the reservoir and works well for celebrations, bachelor/bachelorette parties, or corporate events.

The reservoir has bass and tilapia, and local fishermen offer guided fishing trips. These are low-key, quiet experiences — a different vibe from the party boats. Expect to pay COP 100,000–200,000 for a half day including equipment. Early morning is best. Not widely advertised, so ask at the malecón or your accommodation.
