The 220-meter monolith with 740 zigzagging steps is the undisputed #1 activity in Guatapé. At the top, you get a full 360° panorama of the reservoir, dozens of green islands, and the Antioquia hills stretching to the horizon. Entry costs COP 25,000. Go before 9am to beat the crowds and catch the best morning light. The climb takes 15–20 minutes — moderately challenging but doable for most fitness levels. There's a small café and souvenir shop at the summit.

Boat options include group party boats with music and drinks (from COP 30,000), private lanchas for your group (COP 150,000–400,000 for 1–2 hours), sunset cruises, and luxury yacht charters. Most tours also pass by the flooded ruins of Pablo Escobar's Hacienda La Manuela — visible from the water.

Guatapé's most photographed feature isn't the rock — it's the streets themselves. Every building in the town center has hand-painted bas-relief tiles (zócalos) along its base, each depicting scenes of local life: farming, fishing, flowers, animals, religious figures, and historical events. The tradition dates back decades and gives Guatapé its claim as Colombia's most colorful town. Walk the streets around the Plazoleta de los Zócalos and Calle del Recuerdo for the best examples. Free, and no guide needed — just wander.

Beyond boat tours, the reservoir offers jet ski rentals (from COP 80,000 for 30 minutes), kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, and wakeboarding. On land, ATV tours (45 minutes, from COP 100,000) take you through trails with views of La Piedra and the reservoir. There's also a paintball park near Hacienda La Manuela and a zip line course near the waterfront. Operators line the road between the town and the reservoir — no advance booking needed for most activities.

Guatapé sits in Antioquia's coffee country, and several fincas near town offer coffee tours where you can see the harvest, roasting, and tasting process. Walking tours of the town cover the history of the zócalos, the story of how the original town of El Peñol was flooded to create the reservoir, and the cultural traditions of the paisa people. These typically run 1–2 hours and can be booked through GetYourGuide or arranged with local guides at the main plaza.

If you're staying at a lakeside finca, weekend finca parties are a local tradition, especially during December holidays and Semana Santa. The vibe is relaxed and friendly.
